Current Implementation

What This Site Does Today

This notice is intentionally implementation-based. It describes the current repo and delivery setup rather than pretending the site has systems it does not actually run.

No accounts or checkout

The current site does not offer user accounts, comments, checkout, or newsletter signup.

Search runs in the browser

The on-site search filters a prebuilt index locally instead of calling a custom search backend.

Infrastructure still sees requests

Hosting, CDN, and security layers may process IP address, browser, referrer, and request metadata to deliver and protect the site.

External links have separate rules

If you leave Missing Umami for an external site or service, that destination applies its own privacy policy.

1. Who We Are

Missing Umami is an editorial website and set of browser-based cooking tools focused on Chinese ingredients, substitution logic, dish diagnosis, and flavor science. The site is operated by Mike Sang and is part of the broader "The Way of Nature" network referenced on the site.

This policy covers the canonical public website at www.missingumami.com.

2. Information We Collect

Information you choose to send

The current site does not include account registration, comments, checkout, or a native contact form. If you contact the operator through a linked external service, public profile, or other channel, we may receive the information you choose to include there.

Technical request data

Like most websites, the hosting, CDN, and security layers that deliver this site may process technical data when you load a page. This can include your IP address, browser and device information, referring URL, requested path, timestamp, status code, and related security or caching metadata.

Search queries and tool inputs

The current on-site search and calculator-style tools run in your browser. In the current codebase, the values you type into these interfaces are not sent to a custom Missing Umami application server. However, search terms can be written into the page URL if you submit a search, which means they may appear in browser history, shared links, referrer headers, or routine infrastructure logs if the page is later reloaded.

Retailer click-outs

Some pages may include links to third-party retailers so readers can browse products discussed in guides or shopping pages. Some of those links may include affiliate tracking parameters. If you click one of those links, the retailer will receive the normal request information needed to load its site under its own privacy policy and terms.

3. How We Use Information

We use information described above to:

  • deliver pages, assets, and interactive tools;
  • maintain site security, rate limiting, abuse prevention, and operational stability;
  • debug errors and investigate service issues;
  • respond if you intentionally reach out through an external contact channel; and
  • comply with legal obligations or protect the site, users, and operator.

Where privacy laws require a legal basis, our primary basis for operating and securing the site is our legitimate interest in publishing, maintaining, and protecting the service.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

The current site code does not include a custom advertising pixel, third-party marketing tracker, or a custom analytics beacon.

The site is delivered through Cloudflare infrastructure. Depending on security and traffic settings at the hosting layer, Cloudflare may use strictly necessary cookies or similar technologies for network management, bot mitigation, challenge handling, or related security functions.

If optional analytics, marketing cookies, embedded forms, or similar features are added in the future, this policy should be updated before those features are deployed.

5. Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal information through the current site implementation.

We may share or expose limited information in these situations:

  • with infrastructure providers that host, cache, and secure the site, such as Cloudflare;
  • with third-party retailers if you intentionally click out from a guide or shop page to browse products;
  • when you intentionally follow links from Missing Umami to third-party sites or services;
  • if disclosure is reasonably necessary for legal compliance, fraud prevention, or protection of rights and safety; and
  • as part of a business or asset transfer if the site is reorganized, sold, or transferred.

6. Retention

The site does not currently maintain a user account database or a first-party subscriber list. When technical data is available to us, we keep it only as long as reasonably necessary for security, debugging, and operational purposes.

Some data may be retained directly by infrastructure providers under their own operational retention periods and policies. Information you choose to send through external channels will also be subject to the retention rules of those channels.

7. International Transfers

Missing Umami is delivered over globally distributed infrastructure. As a result, technical request data may be processed outside your home country, including in the United States or other locations where infrastructure providers operate.

8. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or objection in relation to personal information about you.

Because the current site does not run user accounts or a custom user database, our ability to identify or act on a request may be limited to information we can reasonably associate with you.

You can also use standard browser controls to block or clear cookies, but some security or challenge features may not function correctly if strictly necessary cookies are disabled.

9. Do Not Track

The current site does not change its behavior in response to browser "Do Not Track" signals.

The current codebase also does not knowingly include custom cross-site advertising or profiling scripts. Infrastructure providers may still process ordinary request data needed to deliver and secure the site.

10. Children's Privacy

Missing Umami is a general-audience cooking site and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the current site features.

If you believe a child has provided personal information through a channel connected to the site, contact us and we will review the request and take reasonable steps available to us.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this page when the site's data practices, infrastructure, or legal obligations change. When we make material updates, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page and publish the updated version here.
